Advice for glucose screening nausea

Hi all! Second time mama here and it’s time for the dreaded sweet drink. With my first pregnancy I was nauseous and vomiting once I got home from the appointment but passed with flying colours. For some reason this time around I cant seem to do it, I’m now being booked in for my third try because I was sick both times within 30 minutes of drinking the drink. I’m not only annoyed with myself but I’m sure my healthcare providers are tired of my bull***t too. Does anyone have pointers on how I can keep it down? Again I had zero issues with my first pregnancy.

My midwives advised eating a good meal before and after going. The lab that does blood work where I live is a completely separate practice all together from the doctors/midwives offices. They have said with their protocol I absolutely HAVE to fast before my test and they will reschedule if I haven’t fasted for 12 hours prior. I also can’t sip water during the hour I wait either. Alternative options such as an at home glucose meter or things like the jelly bean test are not an option where I live.

If you have to fast... eat 2 boiled eggs and a cucumber salad with only oil, salt and/or vinegar. Or you can take a cucumber and cut it in half, sprinkle salt and snack on that. This is like fasting for glucose test, will NOT effect your results at all and no one will ever know believe me. When they want you to fast, it's because they don't want you to intake ANY carbs, and most people don't realize carbs break into glucose in the body and there is carbs in almost everything we eat. Most green vegetables have 0 carbs, and 2 eggs has like 1 carb which is literally nothing. Eating this will be as if you didn't eat but it'll fill up your tummy and make it easier to digest the dextrose drink they give you. Good luck!

The lab company is the problem here—they absolutely can change the parameters from “fasting” to “non fasting” so that you can eat something. Could you ask your midwife if she can send the order to a different lab like the next town over?

They have to have alternative options.. if you puke everytime and they can’t get an accurate reading they have to have some sort of alternative option. A lot of people get sick , if you can’t eat & you can’t drink water, it’s going to be really hard to combat becoming sick. I don’t understand why the at home glucose meter wouldn’t be an option.
