Hair Dye Question

So I have a dumb question, but I worry about literally everything so I have to ask. Is it possible for hair dye to alter your natural color permanently? I know it washes out but I guess I'm worried about it 'staining'.. 
My hair is medium blonde that's lighter at the ends

I think it could be difficult getting back to your natural hair color when you dye it. I have naturally brown hair but I dye my hair black and have for many years. The chances of me getting my natural color back are slim to none unless I stop dying if and let it grow out. I could color strip it but it’ll probably never be my natural color.
