Surfactant deficiency on a ventilator
My little man was delivered via C-Section on Monday, January 16 due to hearing an arrhythmia. He was taken to the NICU for some rapid breathing, which we thought was just some fluid he had to clear from his lungs.
Tuesday night he suffered a collapsed lung. A Chest tube was put in place to stabilize his breathing. Wednesday morning there was another setback and a breathing tube was needed . The doctor has explained that his lungs are premature and not producing enough surfactant which is needed to keep the lungs open. This was injected through the tube. He is now in stable condition and resting on a ventilator. The doctor is confident that as he recovers and gets stronger the surfactant will begin to produce more rapidly. Everything is looking better, I’m just scared!
