Creating a birth plan!?

Are they helpful or not? I’ve seen so many moms saying they created a plan (no risks at all) but the doctor didn’t do anything that was specified and that worries me a bit. How did it go for you?

I think birth plans are super helpful — however they have to be fluid. You can’t get stuck on one thing in case there is an emergency. I have a birth plan but there are back-up plans written down just in case.

I just told my doctor I did want an epidural. I didn’t plan for anything else because 1. I didn’t care to & 2. Birth is unpredictable and I was open to whatever the doctor would have suggested because they are the professional.

I don’t think they’re worth it. I work in OB and I’ve seen some WILD birth plans and the ones with the most requests or the most specifics usually lead to the most disappointments. I’d focus the most on pain control and interventions but otherwise go with the flow. 
Personally my birth plan was go in, get epidural if I think I need one, deliver by whatever means is the safest (vaginal preferred)

I had a birth plan, but it didn’t go like I wanted. Not because my doctor refused, but because labor and everything that goes with it is so unpredictable. I was told before hand to expect your birth plan to be more of a guide rather than a rigid checklist. That was the best advice I ever got. It’s good to know what your preferences are and to be educated on what’s going on and what can happen, just be open to change. ❤️

I think having a birth plan in mind at the beginning of your pregnancy & discussing it with the doctor at the first few appointments is so important so that you can switch to a more accommodating or better match if needed. Birth plans are great, but keep in mind that something unexpected may happen & plans change. I also think some women fail to realize hospital rules/protocol that can’t be ignored just because of an unrealistic birth plan & that’s how they plan their DR for not following the plan

I think birth plans get a bad reputation because some women have insanely specific birth plans that they don’t discuss ahead of time with their doctor, and/or some women aren’t flexible with their birth plan. You can refuse any hospital intervention, but it’s the doctors and nurses responsibility to tell you why they recommend that intervention-sometimes this comes across as doctors not following your plan. Communication ahead of time is key, so it’s a good idea to discuss things ahead of time with your doctor, and just ask questions/educate yourself on interventions they perform in the hospital and why.
I didn’t have a formal birth plan. I knew I would most likely want an epidural, and I just wanted baby out whatever is safest. I was perfectly ok with any standard hospital interventions. 
My biggest advice is be flexible, educate yourself on labor and hospital practices, ask questions- but don’t stress the details! Control what you can but accept that some things will change and some things you can’t control.

I’ve given birth 4 times. Had a pretty detailed birth plan with all of them. The only one that didn’t go well, was when my baby was delivered by an on call male doctor I had never met. He wasn’t even from my OB office. I tore and he said I didn’t, so no stitches were put in and at my 6 week check up I still wasn’t healed from tearing. He wouldn’t give me my baby for immediate chest to chest. Didn’t delay cord clamping. Wiped all her Vernix coating off. I was completely uncomfortable with him touching me, as I requested no males. From what I understand he was fired from being able to deliver at the hospital I went to not to long after￼ because of so many complaints.

I had a birth plan which was ignored, myself and my baby were put into actual life threatening danger because doctors ignored me (long story), I was assaulted, my son was medically kidnapped for no actual reason, and we had to involve lawyers and police to help us leave the hospital. worst experience of my life. Homebirthed second baby and had peace. 
Most doctors will say they agree with your birth plan whilst rolling their eyes behind your back with every intention of doing whatever they want regardless of how you feel about it lol.
