Question about peace sign specifically in Europe

Random…I know. Lol.

But I had seen a post and it made me think about a time in my high school years when I had been wearing a specific shirt of the band Bring Me The Horizon with the singer, Oliver, on stage doing the peace sign but the back of his hand was facing the camera. I had been sent to the office for dress code because the teacher claimed that sign meant the middle finger in Europe…is this true? I thought middle finger was just allover the world you use your middle finger lol considering he has pictures where he is using…his middle finger 😂
