Did marriage change your relationship?

I want to get married to my current boyfriend however I’m too scared because too many times I hear people say the relationship changes and not for the better. Did it change your relationship if so how? Good or bad?

That’s a load of rubbish. If you’re marrying the right person and you’re happy and not doing it just because you think it’s the right thing to do or because you want a ‘big day’ etc, there’s no reason marriage should change anything. If a relationship fails after marriage it’s because the relationship wasn’t right in the first place but people blame marriage because they don’t want to blame themselves.

People don’t change overnight because they got married, that’s not how it works. Relationships will change no matter what and it’s up to each couple to fight the challenges or fight each other. Most problems arise after marriage because they start living together and need a whole new level of learning how to work together or they have children which also requires lots of teamwork that not everyone is willing to do. That’s why it seems like marriage changes people but that’s not accurate

I think it depends on the relationship prior to marriage. IMO relationships “change” when you move in together, when you have children, when you share finances, when some tragic life event happens, etc. I don’t think the act of marriage alone changes a relationship, but if you weren’t living together before or you weren’t sharing money before - things may seem a little difficult to navigate at first, just because it’s new territory. I moved in with my partner & had children with him before marriage, so our relationship didn’t change much just because of a certificate. You just see different dimensions of someone when you begin to share your entire lives. For some people, it doesn’t work out - for other people, it’s different but not in a negative way. Relationships evolve / devolve over time no matter what. Just depends on the two people in it.

I myself am not married but I’ve talked a lot with my sister and brother in law about what marriage has been like for them and how it has or hasn’t changed their relationship. They both have told me that it really didn’t change all that much for them and if it did change anything it wasn’t in a negative way. My BIL always says when he thinks back on the memories he has with my sister he very rarely thinks of things as “before being married” and “after being married”. If anything it just solidified their love for each other and made any legalities easier such as having my sister on his insurance through his work. And it made them feel more solid in their decision to try and start a family together and now they have an adorable 7 month old son 🥰

Not marriage but kids did. The first time in our relationship things got dicey was the exhaustion survival mode a few months pp. we were good both times before 6 months
