Avoiding pregnancy without birth control

I am 8 months post partum and do not want to conceive again for a couple years. I was on birth control but have had trouble remembering to take it, and I got every side effect listed and never felt real good. I just started my first cycle since baby was born and am attempting to track my cycles to hopefully avoid pregnancy without taking birth control. Any tips on preventing without birth control(my husband hates condoms so he hardly ever uses them, he doesn't mind the idea of having another baby soon but I want to wait for my body to heal and be ready)
