How much time should I take off work when I have the baby?

I was thinking about taking maybe 3-4 months off work but I have a feeling when I have the baby I'll never want to go back to work again and just stay home and take care of the baby lol! How much time are you ladies planning or have before taken off work?

In Aus I think you must take 12 weeks as a minimum, although I'm not 100% sure on that. I'm planning on taking 14 months off to get is past the first birthday. But with my work, I can go back early if I need or want to or I could probably do some work from home. But as for what you should take, I'd say take as long as you can afford to financially. In Aus the cost of day care is very high, so often it's not worth working full time after you have a baby.

I think ill be taking the standard 6 weeks. I may use vacation days for more, but I will be working from home after so I think it will work out ok.

I'm taking 12 weeks. It's unpaid but I have short term disability insurance that will cover part of it and I have a bunch of banked up sick time. Where I work 12 weeks is pretty standard.

Check with your employer to see if there's any policy. The baby's father should check as well. My former employer offered 8 weeks paid leave and I took 4 weeks unpaid. My husband's new employer offers 6 weeks paid. So he can stay home with me for 6 weeks. Depending on what country you're in, the USA has FMLA - the family medical leave act. You're federally entitled to 12 weeks unpaid but you have guaranteed job security. Good luck!
