Catcalling: Harmless or Street Harassment?

Hi Glow community! Have you seen Hollaback's recent viral video of a woman getting repeated catcalled on the streets of New York City? Do you think catcalling is street harassment?

Have you ever experienced street harassment in your own life?

I don't like how the video edited out white males. Other than that, street harassment is real. I get it all the time. Sometimes it really scary, and dudes can be very persistent. It's hard to tell what's a compliment/greeting and what's harassment. I'm from the south, and a simple hello can be out of courtesy, or lead into uncomfortable comments and questions.

When I was about 16 when a  guy from a construction site followed me five blocks cat calling me, trying to block me from getting away from him and even grabbing my back pack to keep me near him until another guy stepped in and told him to quit being a creep. It's scary as fuck. Even when they are just saying "compliments" it's disgusting. I'm a person, not some cheap sex object for men or women  to yell "let me taste that pussy!" Or "I'd go to jail if you let me get that ass" at while I'm just trying to about my day.

I absolutely hate cat calling. It's so disrespectful and annoying. If I don't know you then you shouldn't be harassing me down the street like it will get you anywhere. People need to grow up an start having more respect

I don't agree with it. I feel very uncomfortable walking and hearing someone tying to "be nice." I've heard "hey ma whatchu doing tonight" and "damnnn girl" , "you looking good today" and "what you can't say hi back" and many other remarks I've been beeped at and whistled at and had men yelling obscene things out of their window. I've had guys slip me their numbers while I as at work!!! At work?!?!really? I would turn around and throw out right in the trash in front off them. No thanks! I'm not a toy I respect myself. I'm so glad my husband is modest and respectful towards women. I think it's disrespectful and disgusting. If you are interested in a lady there is a million other ways to get their attention than to be called like a freaking dog in front of people. I really hope women have more self respect and dignity.

I don't really understand why it's a big deal. Take it as a compliment. If a man whistles at you just keep on walking. I just smile & laugh. As long as they don't say " I wanna fuck you" or they start following you, just take it as a funny ha ha compliment and keep on moving.

The same video concept was recreated in New Zealand, yet the woman walking around didn't experience catcalling like the woman in New York. Have any of you seen it? Any thoughts on why the results were different?

There's a difference between someone just saying "hey love" or "hey beautiful" and leaving it at that and someone badgering you and following you. The video had a couple guys that just said "hey have a nice day" or "hey beautiful" and that was it. In my opinion that is not harassment. But the one guy that followed her for what...5 straight minutes? Yeah that's harassment. And creepy as fuck.
