Tax question??

My husband and I got married August 1st of this year and hes going to claim me on his taxes, and my dad keeps saying hes claiming me on his  just so he can get an extra 1,000$ which we need for our son who will be here in march my dad would be the to get in trouble or audited wouldn't he?

If you file before he does he won't be able to use you as a dependent if filed electronically. If he does a paper file he can but will most likely get audited or won't get anything back.

Youre married .. When your dad walks you down the aisle he gives you away .. Giving you away means you're now your husbands responsibility. 
Tell your dad to stop claiming for you tell him why you need it more than him and as long as you're not living with your parents he doesn't have a legit reason to keep it from you

I just want to have this right... Do you work?, if so, you and your husband would file jointly (as long as you changed your ssn) and your father cannot claim you as a dependent. Neither would your husband though, it would be a joint tax. You can file separately (me and hubby did last year and got more back) but you would need to file your own return in which again, your dad cannot claim you. He can only claim if he supports you. If you are living with him or he is helping with bills he has the right to claim you as a dependent.

Your dad can get in serious trouble for claiming you on his taxes if you do not live with him!  Just saying, it all depends on who files 1st they both can not claim you, there will be a red flag pop up on your ss #  when the accountant runs it through the system!!!   So good luck but I would just go ahead and let your husband claim you that's who you live with just my opinion ?

You can only claim yourself once. But you can often get a free tax question answered by phone at some tax companies.

I think that as long as you're not complicit in your dad claiming you, then he would be the one commiting fraud (not you). If he's not supporting you anymore (and your husband is), he shouldn't be claiming you anymore. You told him not to and that your husband is claiming you, right?

The IRS has a number you can call on their website. They probably don't get too many calls this time of year, if you want to give that a try.

Unless you're under 19 or under 24 and a full-time student, you don't qualify as a dependent for your dad. You and your husband should file your taxes as soon as you're able (January 20 I think) to preempt your dad, since he apparently won't listen to reason.

The tax benefits will be better if your husband claims you. Otherwise you'd have to file as married but separate..

Your dad shouldn't be claiming you anymore.
