Lip liner

I've never really used anything on my lips. I have really big lips so I've felt insecure about having a lot of color on them. I've gradually gotten to where a wear lipstick close to my natural color. I've been wanting to try lip liner and was wondering for any tips! I really don't understand the purpose so if someone could explain it would be very helpful :) Thank you!
