Cord accidents?

I've heard so many horror or almost horror stories about cord accidents during labor.

Why don't hospitals or OBs check for cord around the neck via US in the last weeks of pregnancy or at the hospital during early labor?

No, they don't routinely check for that. Unless the baby was moving less or had a lower heart rate, then they would. But it's easier for the cord to move and wrap around the neck after the water breaks, that's one of the reasons you go right to the hospital when your water breaks, and why you don't move around too much after.

My sister just delivered her son, whenever she had hard contractions or started to push, the baby was in distress...when she delivered, the cord was around his neck and they had to cut it super quick. He is perfectly fine now 1 week old :)

This is one of the reasons they monitor mom and baby closely during delivery (and also why delivering at a hospital is a good idea). Try not to worry about it, it happens sometimes and you can't do much about it. Here is a newborn pic of the little guy :)

It usually happens at birth that's why they don't check just monitor baby's hb during labour drops in heart rate means distress and possibly caused by the cord .... when I was in labour my boys heart dropped and we had a major emergency I was knocked out and cut open within minutes he came out blue the cord was that tight and around his neck 3 times if it wasn't for doctors quick thinking he'd of been gone :( x

Durning labor the cord can move around. When the baby enters the girl canal the cord can get wrapped or can prolapse suddenly...it's not something that is Set up much more then a couple of hrs before ful labor

I was just told that the umbilical cord is wrapped twice around my baby's neck. I'm 32 weeks pregnant. My nurse practitioner caught this in my growth scan. Apparently it's not usually an issue until labor since there will be less amniotic fluid, but I have to count my kicks twice a day and go get monitored once a week now.

Does pregnancy sex have any effect on the risk of umbilical cord accidents?

It seems like some accidents like cord prolapse would happen during labor, but accidents like cord around the neck could be detectable in the weeks before or during early labor if they bothered to look. But they don't usually. I wonder why not too, seems like an easy thing to check.

The cord moves around just like your baby does, they monitor you closely through out labour and if anything looks out of the norm they will do something about it. Before labour your baby's movements would indicate if something was wrong, that's why they advise you to keep an eye on baby movements. This is unfortunately something that can happen x
