Downs Screening: personal feelings?

My doctor recommended downs screening at my appointment yesterday but hubby and I are having a hard time deciding if we want to do it.
I'm told it would be a blood test at 11 was and an ultrasound at 12 weeks - so no harm but also not covered by insurance or Medicare - then you are told you fall into one of two categories; high risk or low risk. 
Neither category is 100% and my Dr said he'd had 2 bubs in 'high risk' and both were born normal.
I don't think I could consider termination in either case which makes me feel like this would be pointless - yet my dr still recommends - anybody comfortable to share their personal view? (no judgement please)

My ob told me that why spend the money ($400 in adelaide) on the blood test when you can have the scan at 12 weeks.  From this scan they give you a % of risk and then you can decide to go ahead with the blood test or not. Then you can spend the money on other items. We personally waited due to his advice and the scan % were so low for risk we didn't bother with the blood test.  But my sister wanted to know what sex the baby was so this test tells you that as well so she had it done, personal decision I reckon ☺️

I was the same as you but I still had it done... I thought at least if I know I can mentally prepare myself

Yep same here. I had it done just to prepare myself if I were high risk.

I'm having mine done through the Royal Brisbane Women's hospital and it's not costing me anything.......whi told you it wasn't covered?? I'd be doing more research into that.

For us we've already had a 7wks dating scan at QDI bulk billed & covered by medicare and a scan at 8wks for a suspected MC, also at QDI and bulk billed & covered by medicare.

The hospital has us booked in for the screening scan at 13wks & then a gender scan at 19wks, both are covered through the hospital.

We have no health insurance or anything and it's all through public health care.

What state are you in?

As far as the scan itself, we haven't thought about why they do it, we're just having it so we can see our baby.

I had it done, it's really something that's up to you! When I worked in radiology I always reminded women it was another opportunity to see bub lol if your happy to pay for it do it 😊 you might as well! Xxx

We did ours, even though we knew we probably wouldn't terminate anyway, my doctor wanted me to do it and we are first time parents so we sort of went with the flow.  (I am 32, so I am not sure if it was an age reason)

It was nice to see bubs again anyway, but the technician at our dating scan said there wasn't really a need to do it, unless we would be likely to terminate.

With both kids, we didn't, as we wouldn't have terminated. You're generally low risk if there's no family history and under a certain age.

We did it but just paid for it (Australia) as for me it was another opportunity to see our baby...
We lost our first last year at 10weeks natural mc.
I wouldn't terminate whatever the results...

I had it done at 12 weeks, also because after that I only got a scan at 20weeks and I'm not going to be having another one for this pregnancy.
