Did you have a sex ed class in school?

Did you take sex ed? Did your parents give you "the talk?" Do you feel like you were equipped with the proper information?

I was very lucky. My mother was emotionally abusive and distant, but my grandmother was in the medical field for 40 years, and no question I askes her was off limits- periods, sex, birth control, how to buy a bra, why do I have hair here, why am I breaking out, why do I get so sad before my period, what happens during sex, what does "gay" mean, what is abortion- she had heard it all. She answered frankly and sometimes made me blush with her very anatomically correct explanations, but she also laid it all out for me, and never used cute euphemisms or phrasing to sugar-coat anything. I was already ahead of my classmates when we had sex ed in 7th grade. I went to Catholic high school, so we learned about conception, pregnancy, and birth, and while we were never explicitly told to not have sex until we were married, it was implied. My dad was always available for me to ask questions, and I did, but I couldn't ask him if he preferred Always to Tampax or what the best way to help cramps was.

Unfortunately, a lot of kids aren't as lucky. Parents need to suck it up and answer their kids' questions frankly- knowledge is power, and every child has the right to know what is happening to their body and why. Sex ed isn't a how to manual for sex. It's giving kids the tools they need to navigate a world they have never stepped foot in- how pregnancy actually happens, what sex is, what STDs are, etc. They are going to find out from someone- best to give them accurate, factual information before they hear it from peers who may not know any more than them. I do think sex ed should be offered in schools, but I think it needs to start at home and start (with age appropriate information, of course,) early.

I don't, in ANY way, count on school to raise my child. She gets the sex talk from ME. Her educational needs are reinforced by ME. There are just too damn many parents that rely on their children's schools to raise the children for them. What a shame. I will always stay on top of keeping my daughter informed of all things she needs to know. She's 8. I've had the sex talk, the puberty talk, the 'you can love whomever you love, no matter if it's a boy or girl' talk, the drugs talk, the stranger & predator talk. I'm trying my best to raise a healthy, smart, & informed child. Why blame school if you are the one dropping the ball?

I hate the fact that so many women are blaming the sex education at school for the lack of knowledge among teens. Its NOT the schools job to do the hob of the parents. Parents need to educate their teens and let them aware if their own sexuality. If you're the 
"School sex end is a failure!" Type if mom change yourself. Its YOUR kid its YOUR responsibility to teach them about sex and the methods of contraception!!! Stop blaming others for something you failed to do!!

In grade 5 we had a basic sex Ed class. It taught about how babies were made, and reproductive systems. In high school (grade 11) we had a very comprehensive class that lasted about a month or so. My teacher even showed us how to put a condom on properly (she used a banana). It was very informative. She passed around a hat that we could put questions in (in case some people were shy) and she answered all of them. My mother also had the talk with me. I'm planning to do the same with my kids. While it's not the schools responsibility to make sure kids practice safe sex, I feel it should be mandatory. Some parents will just teach abstinence or not even talk about it at all. That's horrible, and children need to learn about it somewhere.

I went to a catholic all girls school where we had no sex-ed at all!!! I think it's appalling, guessing they expected us all to become nuns!! :-)

I took health and for about three weeks our curriculum was sex ed. I mean I think sex ed is great if schools offer it but I will sit down with my children and talk to them on top of them having a sex ed class. My mom had the talk with me and then I took health in high school. I think it's great because it gives you an opening to talk with your children more about sex.

Yes I hated it. Esp in middle school when we were in class with opposite sex as well and knowing what I was doing at home and the feelings I was having ....us know masturbation, really made it uncomfortable! I felt like very one knew my secret lol. It wasn't until I was listening to de drews sex radio show one night and some other frightened young girl called in about how she thought something was wrong with her because she was masturbating... That I knew it was normal. Lol so point being...when you teach the birds and the bees you should def mention how it's okay and healthy and a better option then sex when you are young to touch yourself!

The sex Ed program I had was shit. They didn't even teach us how to properly put on a condom... 
The ironic part? My school has a ton of pregnancies. 
Abstinence based sexual education programs do not work. 
I'm very thankful for resources on the Internet that allowed me to educate myself.
