How well does the depo shot work?

Question

I got my shot today and I know it is 99% effective if used correctly but, what I don't understand is, what does it mean by correctly? Can he cum inside me or does that make my pregnancy chances higher? I know it doesn't protect against disease. I'm new to this and my doctor didn't really explain a whole lot except the information I mentioned above and that I need to get it Every three months. Thanks to those in advance.

Correctly means that you get your shot on time. The 1st cycle I had spotting a lot, but decided to keep trying. after the 2nd cycle the spotting stopped and I didn't have a period for 2 years. Good luck 🍀

Correctly means you should get it approximately every 2 and a half months.  But I highly suggest you do not stay in depo if you plan on having children.

I was on it for 2 years and that was the only form of protection my partner and I used I never got pregnant and never had a period the entire time. Just make sure you hey it when your supposed to. I stopped getting it cuz we are TTC now

I was on it for 5 years never got pregnant and never missed a shot. I got off of depo back in 2012 and got pregnant July 2014. If you are on depo for a year or more it'll take a year to fully be out of your system to get pregnant.

Everyone's bodies react different. I got the shot and had my period for 4 months straight everyday non stop! It was god awful. It also messed with my hormones so bad! And after using it I started getting ovarian cysts. My fiancé and I didn't use any other protection and didn't get pregnant though

As long as you get your shot on schedule you will be protected, even if he ejaculates inside you. This is caused by a bunch of different factors such as stopping ovulation and changing the consistency of your cervical fluid so that if you do ovulate (off chance) the sperm will have mobility issues making it past your cervix. I used it over two years with no additional protection and never fell pregnant. Make sure you are ALWAYS on time and if you're late use backup protection as there's a chance it can fail as soon as you're late getting your next injection. 
Online it says to wait a week if it wasn't injected during your period, my doctor said it was effective right away. To be on the safe side if you weren't menstruating at the time of injection wait a week or two (or use a second form of BC to be safe).
As always, accidents can happen so if you absolutely want to avoid a pregnancy a second form of BC may be a good option.
