Ya it can help relieve cramps. Put about 2 towels down (folded in 1/2) or do it in the shower.

The time I lost my virginity I was on my period and at first I didn't wanted to because of that, but he really didn't seem to care so I didn't care either. It's not gross at all, I think its a great way to see how much trust and how comfortable you feel with your partner. 
That is my point of view, of course everyone thinks different.

I have and at first I think "good lord I'm going to bleed all over and it's going to look like a murder scene" but at the end of the day it feels good. Takes away any cramping I'm having and it's not as messy as you think. I did it before when I was in high school. But only a few times. It's not that it's gross it's that it's so wet already that it doesn't feel as good. There is definitely such a thing as too wet.
