Medications?

Question

I currently take Prozac and Xanax for severe anxiety and my PCP said the benefit outweighs the cost but my OB said to stop taking them if I can. What should I do? I'm 12 weeks and have been taking them pretty regularly, trying to only take Xanax when I truly need it. Thanks!

My OB suggested I stop taking the Xanax as soon as possible. I weaned myself off over the course of 4 days, but once in a while I just can't do it, so I'll take a half. If it's bed time or the weekend I actually just take a big swig of Benadryl because it makes me drowsy, and I've had decent luck being able to just fall asleep if I'm having moderate anxiety to combat it, but there's been 3-4 times this pregnancy where I just couldn't handle it and had to have the Xanax. You know yourself, and you will know the point you can't handle it anymore. Be confident that taking 1 pill or half a pill is better for yourself and your baby than having panic/anxiety attacks that you can't treat and handle. That stress, in my opinion, is way worse for baby than taking 1 pill a month for those worst days, and I know plenty of psychs that agree with me.

Remember, OBs know what's best for baby, not necessarily what's best for mental health. Good luck to you, you can do it.

Honestly your OB is saying what's best for your baby, your other Dr is saying what's best for you.

My OB switched me to Zoloft because they prefer that over Prozac during pregnancy.  She had me wein off of klonopin before I got pregnant so idk about that.  I do know that if you doctor thinks you are going to be anxious, or depressed during your pregnancy it is better to stay on the meds that for you do harm to yourself or your baby.  Good luck!

Definitely try to get off the Xanax and ask your OB to tell you how to wean yourself off of the Prozac. All you can do is try.

I would talk to your PCP again. You are right to whittle down the medications, but if it's medically necessary, keep taking. Did yor midwife or your OB tell you to quit taking if possible? If you are going to have panic attack without, don't stop. That is more dangerous to the baby that small doses of medicatin, I'm guessing.

I think Xanax is a class D and Prozac is a class C. I was taking a benzodiazepine like Xanax and my ob told me to stop taking it. I had to wean off.

I was pretty dependent on Lexapro when I got pregnant. My doctor said since Lexapro hasn't been studied enough to be safe for a pregnancy. She advised that I quit cold turkey right away. After two weeks of withdrawal hell I felt fine and haven't had any anxiety issues. Hopefully you'll figure out something that works for you!

When I became pregnant I was on Xanax and Klonopin for anxiety. Both my primary physician and my OBYN told to immediately stop taking them. They said both were considered class D drugs and to be safer to find alternative medication in the class C. Honestly, I can't remember what they prescribed me that was considered as class C, but it didn't work. So, your best bet is to stop taking the medication.

I was on a lot of meds for M.S and Xanax was one of them , as soon as I found out I was weaned off
