Defining spotting?

Can someone give me more definition as to "spotting"? I suffer from endometriosis so my periods are usually full blown "flooding" (like almost 2 packs of overnights in 4 days) and CRIPPLING pain but I've started bleeding (began with dark tinged mucus and is now bright red), and there is minimal pain and a lot less blood.
