Baby shower?

Why do people have baby showers? I am a first time mom and I am unsure if I will have a baby shower. Just want to hear why you ladies did or did not have one. Thanks!

Baby showers are meant to celebrate the life of your new baby. Some people bring gifts to "shower" the new mother with gifts to welcome the baby since babies are quite expensive. They were at first meant for just first time children but it is becoming more popular to do one for each child. (I personally think every baby deserves to be celebrated as they are each a gift from God) it's completely up to you to do one or not. But a family/friend usually plans them.

So people can help you prepare for the baby and I also feel that it allows you to see all your family and friends before you have the baby and everything gets hectic

We are first time parents and we had bought all the major stuff already so when we had our shower, we invited all of our family and friends and did a big barbecue (pig roast). It wasn't about the gifts or anything for us, we wanted to celebrate the future birth of our child. We are due around the 4th of July so we won't see most of them until thanksgiving/Christmas.. It was nice for our families to mingle together and friends we haven't seen in a while. Plus everyone got to meet the nanny and parrain (godparents). We did get gifts, but that wasn't what our goal was.

I really don't like the attention of it all but I'm having one. My family insisted. They explained to me it's where people can help you get things for baby and the party is more for them than myself. Which sort of makes sense.

My whole family is having a big party with a pig repast and live music this summer. We are integrating our shower into that party.
