Discrimination at work or overly sensitive?

I've been working at a high end restaurant for over a year and a half now as a host. We are approaching summer which is our busy season so we have several job openings for servers and food runners which is much higher paying then my position as a host. When I asked if I would be able to move up into a serving or food runner position I was told that because I'm pregnant and would eventually need a few months off for Maternity leave they can't and will not spend the time and money to train me in a new position even though i would only be leaving for a few months.  Being 11 weeks pregnant I'm proned to being overly sensitive but i feel as if I wasn't pregnant and needing leave time they would have no problem moving me into a better position my general manager was all for training me until the owners said no due to the fact I would need a few months off to have my baby and recover. Do you think my job is discriminating against promoting me because I'm pregnant or am I just being hormonal?

100% discrimination and 100% illegal. I would absolutely arrange a meeting with your boss and explain to them that you feel you are being wrongfully discriminated against due to your current health situation and that you have been there almost 2 years and deserve the opportunity to advance in your position. Be very calm and respectful, but usually just using the words "discrimination" would alert them and make them think twice about passing over you. Should they be so stupid as to fire you then you have a great reason to obtain legal assistance or contact your local news and make it be known what has happened... I bet you'd be surprised how quickly they changed their tune if you let them know how serious you are. What state are you in?

I completly think that is discrimination. I found out I was pregnant the week that I was promoted at work and told work 2 weeks later - it made no difference to my promotion and I have been sent on alot of training since then to support me in my new role :-) xxx

Wow! That's 100% a discrimination case. Fight it girl! It's a worthy fight! Moms always need better jobs so they can better their baby's lives.

Their example of the 'summer job' thing here doesn't apply. They legally cannot pass you over for a promotion because you're pregnant. There are laws in place for that. Do some research, I bet you can just show them the laws and they'll cave.

It is discrimination, but unfortunately, unless someone else heard them say it to you, it's all he said she said and probably nothing will come of it. They'll do their "investigation" and they'll find that the owners are not breaking the law because there's no one but you to corroborate what you were told. Tread lightly here because most states are At Will employment and realistically, they'll find something else in the policies they have in place to throw at you and either force you to quit or fire you right off... Been there. Got demoted for stated health reasons (I took 3 days off in 2 weeks for doctor's appointments while they were testing me for M.S.) and nothing was done about it. I was forced out of the work place. I'm not saying don't fight for what's legal and correct. I'm just saying they play games to get what they want.

Yes. If they came out and said it right as were not training you for a new position because your pregnant that is full on 100% illegal discrimination. Make a fuss and if they fire you, you can sue them for wrongful termination after they discriminated against not training you because your pregnant and will eventually in about 6 months take time off. That's a whole 6 months away. How long does it take to train someone? About a week I'm guessing plus if your a hostess you most likely already know the lay out of the table sections so that's probably half your training already and being a hostess your already very polite and friendly.
