Why is it such a big deal??

Why is it such a big deal for a 20 year old guy to be dating a 16 year old female? Let's be clear. This is my situation and everyone judges it saying all he wants is sex. He doesn't! He is the most caring and compassionate guy that I've ever met! All he wants to do is cuddle. It's really no different from a 28 year old dating a 40 year old.

It's a big deal because you guys are in different places in your lives and if you guys have sex he can go to jail for statuary rape.

The difference is that you're a minor... I don't know your situation, and I'm glad that he supposedly treats you right.  However, if you two have a sexual relationship, that's illegal, and he could get in real trouble for it and have to live with that mark on his record for the rest of his life. :-/

The issue is here that you are legally not an adult and he is. And, depending on your state and what the age of consent is he could get into trouble with the law.

You can't blame people, our natural thought pattern would be thinking the worse when we hear something like a 16 year old dating a 20 year old. If you two really care about each other, just ignore people, and prove that's why there's nothing wrong with it. Although I think you should really be careful and take things slow. Some guys will turn to be amazing in the beginning but a piece of you know what in the end. Good Luck!😘

My mom and her boyfriend were 11 years apart in age, so I agree that age shouldn't matter generally, but they were both adults and in similar places in their lives. There is a HUGE difference between where someone is (mentally, emotionally, etc.) at 16 than at 20. Myself at 16 never would have recognized myself at 20, your life is completely different in several ways. The people who are making the comments are concerned about you, because at 20 he shouldn't be looking for someone who is 16. You are still in high school and he is an adult. Try not to get offended by people making the comments, please consider what they are saying.

I was 16 when I met my husband & he was 22. Everyone thought the same thing. We have been together for 8.5 years now. Don't worry about what others thing. Trust your heart. Just understand that when you are in a romantic relationship there is ALWAYS chance of heart break, whether you are 16, 26, 56, etc. Use your best judgement & everyone else will eventually see the truth as well. =)

Because youre 16 youre a minor, if you had sex that could get him in trouble.  personally i don't think anyone over the age of 18 should date someone under it, but thats just me

Im also 16 and my boyfriend is 20. We started dating when I was 14 and he was 18, he was a senior in highschool and I was a freshman, I knew his family it wasn't like he was some creep just trying to use me for sex. He has truly changed my life and made me the happiest girl ever. My family kinda questioned it at first but they got used to the idea. My gyno knows he is 20 and it is not a problem as I'm 16 and can be consent to have sex if I wish, my mom knows we have had sex. If any other people have a problem with it I honestly don't give a fuck because they are not my family.
