Should I Bother with a Registry?

My SO and I live out of state, and we don't really have close friends in our new town that would throw a baby shower. I'm expecting our first child in October. We've already bought the big ticket items, such as car seat and stroller and so on. But debating if it's tacky or too forward to register for small items. Is it wrong to ask for baby gifts from family and friends back home??
