SO's depression and anxiety

I just can't take it anymore. I feel like I'm failing him and our relationship if I end things but I just can't live like this. He isn't abusive but is either sad and crying or angry and stubborn and says mean and hurtful things. Even if I'm crying he doesn't seem to care just tells me he wants to be miserable. I really don't know what to do and am open to any suggestions.
