So much pain! Help!!

Kaitlyn • Micheal Owen, June 29th 2015 💙
I'm only four days in and I'm in so much pain! I know it's normal for your nipples to be really sore. I saw my nurse today, she gave me an A+ for my breast feeding technique and the amount he's been eating ( or the amount of frequent poops and pees I've been lucky enough to receive) but I've gotten to the point where I'm in so much pain and I just want a small break for a feeding or two, I haven't pumped yet, I'm thinking about giving my baby formula for just one feeding. My SO is worried that it's too early and that we'd have to teach him how to take the bottle, or that he'd prefer the bottle more. Any suggestions? I have also been putting nipple cream on almost after every feeding.

The first two weeks are the worst! Hang in there. Also make sure the baby is emptying the breast completely before you change breasts. I was changing breast too often and my baby was getting too much foremilk which resulted in over production of milk and a very fast letdown. My baby would pinch my nipples to try and slow the flow which resulted in extreme sore nipples. I encourage you to do more research and hang tough before you give a bottle. I'm 4 weeks and in and doing much better after I did more research.

Hang in there! My daughter is a very aggressive eater so I had soreness for several months. But, I made up my mind that I was going to breastfeed and that determination is what got me through to now, when I actually look forward to feeding my daughter. Never thought I'd say that, but she's ebf and almost five months old!Best thing I ever did was to rub breastmilk on my nipples and let them air dry. It healed a crack I had for two months! Lanolin did nothing for me, but breastmilk fixed the crack in a week!Good luck :) You're doing a great jon!

I found that ditching the bra & wearing my hubby's t-shirts made my nipples heal within a couple days.  When I had to wear a bra, I used shells to keep the fabric off my nipples. Are you using shields?  if so, just ensure they're the absolute correct size.If using pads, my midwife told me to change nursing pads every single time baby eats - to minimize bacteria on nipples. Good luck - I'm sure you two will be bfing pros in the coming weeks, if not days!

Forgot to mention - at first, your milk is very thick & baby has to suck very hard, but it will turn soon & be much easier for baby to suck - making it much easier on you!

I'm 3 weeks in and my nipples are feeling better. Not 100% pain free but better. Stick with it! It's hard but so worth it.  My doctor prescribed me the most amazing nipple cream. It's called Dr. Jack Newmans  all purpose nipple ointment. It saved my nipples. Good luck!

If you can I would say try to steer away from the bottle as much as possible, until your baby gets older and has gotten the hang of feeding. I tried pumping for a week and now I exclusively pump because my baby refuses to take the breast.

The first two weeks were painful for me with irritated nipples and engorged breasts). I'm now four weeks in and feeling a lot better. Try different positions: laying on side, leaning back, football hold, etc to find the most comfortable one for you. I rub in breast milk on my nipple after every feeding and use lanolin 2-4 times a day (whenever they feel dry or chapped). Take care of yourself!

I unfortunately had sore nipples for a few months!! I had inverted nipples and had to use the nipple shield to help at first but then was successful feeding without it after time!! My best advice would be to keep with it and just remember it's the best thing for you and the baby and it'll only be painful for a lil while! Also, putting some of your milk on the nipple after the feeding and letting them air dry will help heal them faster then put the lanolin or vitamin E on before your bra or breast pad and it will get better! Hang in there, you can do it:)
