Adult adoption?

Question

In Japan, apparently 98% of adoptions are adult men. Apparently it has to do with a family not having a son to carry on a family name, or the biological son is competent by the families standards.

What do you think or this?

It's a little bit more complicated than that. The statistics are true, but it's primarily for business purposes and being able to claim that the business is family-run and has been for generations, despite the bloodline being different.
Also, it's notoriously difficult to adopt children in japan for several reasons: 1) consent is required by extended family/relatives or even the mother, if she is alive. Often they won't give consent because although they've given up caring for their child, there is still a bloodline connection and they don't want to give that up.
2) even if consent is given, a child aged 6 or over is still registered as the child of the birth parents. This may seem obvious, but the Japanese birth certificate is more than just a statement about who the parents are: it's a marriage and death certificate too. Also, bill collectors can access that information and demand payment from the child (ie via new adoptive parents) etc and it can also complicate matters when applying to get a passport etc since only those listed on the certificate (or lawyers, etc re prev bill collectors issue) can access that info.

Adult adoptions are also done in the US, usually in order to make inheritance and family ties more legal and easier to understand, particularly in the cases of step children.
