Colic ?

Question

How do I know if I just have a fussy baby vs colic? I'm worried because my 3 week old son was inconsolable this evening and screamed for about an hour. We ended up giving him a bath and he passed out after. It's normal for newborns to just have their moments like this every now and then right?

Usually they say follow the rule of 3. Crying for at least 3 hours a day, for at least 3 days a week for at least 3 weeks in a healthy, well-fed baby. I can tell you that inconsolable for an hour doesn't meet the definition. My son had colic for 6 months. Luckily he was a good sleeper but when he wasn't sleeping or eating, he was screaming. We couldn't take him public places. We had to wear noise-canceling headphones sometimes just to hear ourselves think. We tried gripe water, gas drops, soy formula, fussy baby formula, swaddling, shh-ing, swinging, car rides, baby carrier, stomach massage, and lots more. He finally grew out of it and is a happy 3 year old now. But I can tell you, we were going nuts!  Hopefully yours doesn't progress to that. It didn't really start until 3 months or so. Before that he was generally fussy but I wouldn't say colicky. Hopefully this helps. Not trying to scare you; just maybe trying to put things in perspective. Good luck!

My LO is 3 weeks and this last week has had a constant upset tummy, it seems that way. Poor guy usually up most the night screaming and very fussy. Won't fall asleep except on his tummy most nights and naps. Spoke to the pediatrician today l, he said to try the gripe water. We got some and he has settled way down. Needless to say a Very Happy Mommy and Baby tonight!

You'll know if baby is upset from pain, my daughter gets horrible tummy pain and you can tell that's what it is, she strains and screams at the same time. It's awful.
