Dilation in baby's kidney at 20 weeks?

Question

Baby boy had his anatomy scan today and all looked good (measured a week ahead), but his left kidney was retaining fluid (5 mm). Doc referred me to a specialist to get it checked out, but thought I'd check if anyone else has experienced this. He also said it's a soft market for Down's, but not to worry...much easier said than done!

I haven't personally dealt with this but two of my coworkers had babies with dilated kidneys. One had both kindeys dilated and the other just had one. Both babies were monitored during pregnancy, and one had the full contrast work up after birth. Both are
completely healthy and neither has Downs. The baby that had both kidneys affected is now 2 and his one kidney has resolved and its now normal, just with age, and the other kidney functions normally. My understanding is that this is fairly common and the majority of the time it's nothing to be worried about. They send you to a specialist just to cover all their bases. Hopefully this will be the case for you too :)

It happened to me while pregnant with my son. Apparently it's common in boys. I was checked very closely and was given clearance at 32weeks..

I was told this was very normal in baby boys because boys tend to hold their urine longer! Wouldn't worry!
