If you elope, are you allowed to have a bridal shower?

Or I guess, is it polite/proper etiquette? We'll be telling people before we do it, and then we'll have a party afterwards to celebrate us being married. I wouldn't plan one myself, but I suppose if family members wanted to for me I wouldn't object.. is it customary when you have a wedding to host your own bridal shower? I feel like that's being selfish or just asking for things. Thoughts??
