Is abusive behavior genetic or learned?

My SO is abusive when he is angry. The stories go that his biological father was physically and mentally abusive to his mom. His father was only around until age 2. After that his mother was married another 5 times to different men. Many didn't treat her well. Is it possible his upbringing has contributed to his lack of reason and abusive tendencies?
