Breastfeeding ???

Question

I'm having my 5th child and have never ever breastfed before I searched thus topic already and didn't find my answers so here I am asking lol .. is it possible to breast feed and bottle feed at the same time ??

I'm having a lot of mixed emotions about breastfeeding and just looking for some insight period !! Anyone :) :)

BTW I'm 34 and 3 ... and already 1cm dilated and was just placed on bed rest ..

You want to only breastfeed for at least the first 3 weeks to make sure you are supplying enough milk and to get a good latch. After that, you can start bringing in formula. I breastfeed my daughter until 6 months then started pumping so my husband could feed her at work but I continued breastfeeding at night. It's up to you how you want to feed your child but I would discuss it with your doctor. They can explain it more for you. Hope this helped.

Talk with a lactation consultant. There will be one at LD but you can call one now (ask your OB or midwife).  If you want your baby to have breast milk you want to exclusively BF for as long as possible, and that includes avoiding the pump. I had to go back to work at 6w too and my son had no issues - and you'll want to keep nursing when you get home because pumps aren't as good at "milking" you as the baby is. I started about a week before I had to go back to work, and pumped once right after LO ate. Then I gradually added more sessions but always let LO nurse first, then I pumped when I knew he wouldn't be hungry for a few hours.

One thing I have read is that you shouldn't use a bottle or dummy (pacifier I think it is in America) for the first 4 weeks to establish a good nipple latch, ensure a good milk supply and not to confuse baby. I'm not sure how this would work if you wished to do both as baby may find it easier to get milk out of a bottle and reject your nipple. Sorry if I haven't really helped but just something I have read many times with wanting to BF myself. Maybe something else to have a read up on or hopefully someone on here will be able to clear this up a bit ?

You can breast feed and pump milk for bottles or bottle feed him breast milk with pumping even tho it's hard to do first few weeks.

Oh yes. You can absolutely do breast and pump. Some even do formula. I agree with the other posts to talk to a lactation consultant. You might also want to check out cloudmom on YouTube- her videos are so short and informative

I pump and take the milk to the hospital for my baby. But if he runs out before I can get more up there they will give him formula

Yes.  My mom did a hybrid.  She bottle fed during the day and breast fed at night.  We were fairly good sleepers, so that meant she only had to breast feed for 3 or 4 months.

She did mention that the initial engorgement was awful.  It takes a little bit for your body to figure out that you are only Breastfeeding part time.
