Postpartum Bleeding

How long has it taken for your bleeding to stop? I'm 12 days pp from a vaginal delivery (small tear, two stitches he tells me) and had heavy bleeding for 2-3 days, next to nothing for two days, bright red bleeding in fits and starts since, and today it's changed to more like a period--thicker, darker and with more small clots. I expected bleeding for a long time, but then so much of what I've read seems to indicate that it should have ended by now. What was your experience?
