How early can you Doppler a heartbeat?

Question

I am an ICU nurse and too nervous to do an US on myself this early at 7w3d, but I want to hear the heartbeat so bad. I was carrying around a Doppler today and was so tempted! Would I even be able to hear it??! My husband would probably kill me if I did it without him :/

My midwife tried the Doppler at 9 weeks and we couldn't find the heartbeat :(. She had warned me before trying it that 9 weeks might be too early to hear it.  She had me come in again the next week (10weeks) and we heard it loud and clear!

It's pretty hard to find that early. It took a long time and I would have to take breaks because I'd get frustrated. If you can wait, I'd wait until at least 12/13 weeks. It will always be near your panty line until your obviously further along. I will say the home Doppler was the best thing I've purchased for my husband and I :-)

I just found mine last week at 8 weeks!  This is my 4th baby so I have had some good practice.  :) Sometimes I can find it right away and sometimes it can take awhile.

Nope. My nurse midwife said don't bother trying before 12 and sometimes 13 weeks at least. People freak out if they can't heat it and depending on where your uterus is (more towards front or back or if you are overweight) also depends on how easy it will be with a Doppler. We tried in the office at 12 weeks and heard nothing. I go back tomorrow at 14 weeks and hope to hear it then. I'm not sure how an ultrasound or internal ultrasound would be though.

All of the home dopplers I've looked at say as early as 10 weeks.
