Off and on Birth Control

Last month, August, I went off my birth control when I finished my period because I was so busy I didn't have time to get it refilled. My period was supposed to come Monday the 14th and that's when I started this months birth control pills because I thought that my period had started. I still haven't gotten my period and my breasts have been very sore and I've been having cramping everyday since, like I usually do when I have my period. Did starting the birth control before I actually got my period mess up my period for this month? Should I call my doctor?
