Love and miss?

I had been with a guy for 2 3/4 years and i loved him with everything i had within myself. We ended a little while ago like actually ended though we were frequently off and on our entire relationship. But after our 1st year he was abusive to a point of threatening my life. I still tend to miss him though we've had our multiple incounters with the law. I havent spoken to him in about 5 months but i find myself missing him and even crying about him. Am i wrong to miss him? He was my first and only love though i have attempted to be with other people both emotionally and sexually. What should i do to get over him?
