What are your views on teaching your kids about sex and letting them if they think they are ready?

If your child comes to you at 16 and says "Mom I want to have sex" what is your response? I feel like telling them no would just make them do it irresponsibly and possibly result in a teenage pregnancy. When my daughter says she is ready I'm gonna teach her everything I know about sex ed and safe sex and stds I possibly can. What is everyone elses views?

I'm an American made with Swedish parts. In Sweden sex ed starts in preschool, it's age appropriate and uses basic analogies to teach children about the reproductive system. And what to do if you're being touched inappropriately, or if you're nervous about being alone with another person.

Sex education is continued through the schooling system.

So we'll be buying the picture books for our kids. And if they have a question we'll use medically accurate information and anatomically correct drawings and names for body parts.

Education and firm understanding of how everything works is the key for prevention of pregnancy and STDs!

For me I knew I couldn't separate physical affection from actual affection. So sex before marriage wasn't on the table till I met my then boyfriend now husband. I hope that my children will be as aware as I was so they can decide when they're ready!

I would still discourage her from having sex but I'd still teach her safe sex cuz I kno if she really wants to she would find a way

Even if you won't allow it, I honestly believe it'll happen one way or another. I have seen teens rebel against strict parents, the worse of the worse of all. I met a girl who went to a Christian school, who told me she got pregnant at 16 and hid it until she was 8 months until her mom found out. Be the parents you would want.. Don't try to control their life, they'll find a way out.

I want to teach our children about sex when they start to hit puberty, hopefully before they want to have sex. I want them to be informed of the consequences of their choice.

If my son or daughter came to me at 16 saying they feel like they are ready for sex we are having a very long and in depth talk. I can't give a definite answer but how he or she responds to this discussion will decide my answer. Bottom line honestly if they want to do it they will with or without my blessing but I would appreciate the chance to pick their brains and make sure they know as much as possible and that it was correct information.

I didn't know about sex.. My parents never taught me and so I learned from friends. The only thing my parents taught me was "don't have it until you are married"....it was really taboo and  I was extremely sheltered with church and homeschooling and so as soon as I talked them into letting me go to public high school I went boy crazy. I slept with about 9 people during those 4 years and actually met my husband there sophomore year. We have 2 babies now.

But I couldn't talk to my mom about anything. I was terrified of her judgement. I refuse to let my daughters relationship get like that with me.. I am going to open and accepting no matter what. I'll probably even offer to get her on birth control as soon as she hits highschool. I know I what I was doing at that age and it's completely normal and not taboo at all. Wish I could have had that relationship. Maybe I wouldn't have slept around so much.

I would encourage them to wait and keep what a lot of girls/boys don't have at 16 and that's their innocence.  I would also ask why they want to do that, my middle daughter and I have a close relationship and she tells me everything, she's not active yet (she's only 13) and she's always said she wants university and better things in life.  She said she doesn't want to end up like me, a teenager with kids to different fathers lol! She has a wise head and I respect that and encourage it
