Comprehensive Sex Education: Yes or No?

Question

Recently in Omaha, NE city Public Schools held a meeting to gauge the community response to updating the sex education curriculum (curriculum that hasn't been updated in 30 years).  It clearly didn't go as planned. With Comprehensive Sex Education (CHE), students are able to opt out of particular areas of the curriculum if it goes against their views/religious beliefs. Yet many staunch opposers of CHE spread misinformation and  became violent during the meeting. What do you think? Should students be allowed to learn beyond abstinence only sex education?

I come from a place that ONLY teaches abstinence only and we have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates because of it. I think that Sex Education needs to be taught completely and teens need to know what will happen if they do choose to have sex and that they need to be having protected sex to help keep them safe from any STDs/STIs and from teen pregnancy. I knew many people in my high school who decided to start having sex and didn't go out and get condoms because they weren't taught that it was appropriate to use them and ended up getting pregnant; they were taught that "sex is bad unless you're married."

I think it should be taught that the only 100%for sure way to avoid getting pregnant or getting an std is to abstain, but if you choose to have sex that you also need to choose to be safe while doing it. Then present all the different options. There's nothing wrong with teaching abstinence, but there is something wrong with not teaching them to be smart and safe. We can hope teens will abstain till we're blue in the face but that's not actually going to make it happen.

Schools should always have CSE with no opting out. If they don't learn at school I know for a fact their parents won't teach them and the web is full of misinformation.

I started sex ed in grade 4 and had it until I graduated. Now we never got into the whole opposite sex part until high school but the teen pregnancy rates were down.

I will admit though I did hate when health and PE were put together in a bundle class. The teachers had no idea what they were talking about.

One said "Having sex isn't like doing drugs. You can't go to a party and go 'Maybe I'll have sex'" no that is exactly what happens. She tried to force the whole "No sex before marriage" thing. Didn't go over well with the school district, school nurse or principal.

My elementary school actually wen out of their way to start their sex ed program because I started my period at 9 and went from a 4' tall kid to a 6' tall woman in a year.

I have no idea why they did that. The sex education after that was "meh" at best. There was no mention of reproductive disorders, or hormonal imbalances or just good comprehensive information about managing your reproductive health.

More often than not I'd correct my teachers, not to be a troll or to be rude but to give out more accurate information. I'd cite my source in case they ever said "Nope, still wrong."

Taking charge of your reproductive organs, male or female is exceedingly important!!
