Hymen?

Question

So where exactly is the hymen located? Is it close enough to the entrance that it can be torn by finger/tampon insertion or is it farther back?

Answer

The hymen is a thin membrane that sits at the opening of the vagina.  There are different types (shapes) of hymens:
- the most common type of shape of hymen is a half moon shaped thin membrane that only partially (a half moon shape) covers the vaginal opening which allows menstrual blood and other vaginal fluids to flow out freely and also allows objects (tampons, menstrual cup, dildo, penis, medical instruments, fingers, etc.) to enter the vaginal opening
- an imperforate hymen (very very rare) is a thin membrane that completely covers the vaginal opening and prevents menstrual blood and other vaginal fluids from flowing out and also prevents objects from being inserted 
- a microperforate hymen (also very very rare) is a thin membrane that almost completely covers the vaginal opening but does have a small opening which allows menstrual blood and other fluids to flow out but makes inserting objects (a tampon) very difficult and, if a tampon is successfully inserted it may be difficult to get it out once it fills with blood 
- a septate hymen is one that has a small band of extra tissue down the center that causes two vaginal openings.
