Should sexual harassment be reported to the police?

So I'm currently having a discussion on facebook with a guy that said "I don't think it should go to that extreme." 
My friend got sexually harassed by an uber driver and she reported him to uber and to the police. I believe she did the right thing but some beg to differ. 
What do you guys think?

I think it depends on what people call sexual harassment. If she was in the uber car and he made a few comments, I think going to the police is a little too far. I would have just got out and thought "Well that was weird" or "He was creepy" but I wouldnt up and press charges. I think thats too dramatic. And that goes for any situation. Making a few sexual comments I don't count as sexual harrassment. Even if he continuously stalked her and texted her making sexual comments after she rejected him...THAT is reportable sexual harassment. A dude trying to get in your pants by making a few statements is just disrespectful, not charge worthy.

I think it depends on the severity. Was there physical force? Did he make threats, or have a weapon? Any unwanted sexual attention/advances that continues after a clear answer, I would report. If someone asks me out or hits on me (even in a sleazy way) I'm not going to call the police. But if you try to touch me, corner me, or press your body onto mine, Yes I'm filing a report.

It depends on the harassment for it to go to the police. If he is stupidly hitting on you then complain to Uber. If he is saying extremely innappriate things or doing anything physically inappropriate you report it to über and the police. For instance I was shopping at walmart and I was in the electronics section. Two of the employees saw me and decided to have a super inappropriate conversation about my "fine china" (said a much more gross word) and what they would love to do to it. I immediatley walked off and found a manager. I told her about what happened. They had no idea I could hear them, but I informed her that it needed to be taken care of and I would like to be walked to my car. I got an amazing amount of apologies from their management and they were terminated from their jobs. If they had acted upon their words or were actually directing their not so secret conversation towards me I would have in addition called the police and filed a complaint.

Ask yourself: is what they're doing illegal? Did they put their hands on you or threaten you? Or did they just hit on you?  If it's the latter, exit the Uber and report them to Uber.

It depends on what's best for the survivor. Yes, holding those accountable is important, but dealing with the legal system can be retraumatizing. No one should have an obligation to report.

I would report it and encourage others to do so - licensed drivers are in a position of trust, they are often alone with young or vulnerable people. If the behaviour isn't nipped in the bud it could escalate.  I used to work in taxi enforcement and saw way too many cases of sexual assault and rape committed by drivers. They need to be weeded out before it gets to that point but that can only happen if incidents are reported to the authorities.

My thing is, it's still a job. Would these guys still act like this if they worked in a building? I doubt it. It's super easy to turn around n report them to a manager. They think no one is looking, so it's OK. I also think these r the men catcalling on the streets. No respect for us women. (Coming from a woman uber driver 😉 )

If someone is sexually assaulted and they want to go to the police then yes. It doesn't matter how "mild" or "severe" it was. If they wish to go to the police that is their choice. The person who sexually assaulted them should be held accountable for that shit.
