Can you refuse to get cervical checks??

Question

I'm a ftm but I was reading that it kinda makes no sense in doing those? It like giving false hope to you. I was wondering how true this was and if anyone has refused to get one.

My OB told me that I didn't have to do it if I didn't want to unless I'm in labor. He said there really isn't that much of a point and it's mostly to satisfy curiosity. Unless of course you are having problems.

Having cervix checks saved my babies.  Had a cervix check at 20 weeks and I had already dilated.  Put on strict bedrest and delivered healthy baby at 34 weeks.  Had cerclage with #2 and cervix mdmts and checks showed pulling on stitch at 25 weeks.  Put on strict bedrest as gain.  Healthy baby at 37 weeks.  Currently 22 weeks with #3.

At the dr office during routine visits, you can absolutely refuse. They aren't indication of imminent labor. I went from 2-10 in 4 hours when I was delivering my first. If the dr checked me the day before, there would be no indication. It just stresses you out. Go ahead and refuse.

There are other ways to see progression during labor. My friend is a Doula. She checks the purple line which is apparently more accurate and not invasive at all. Fascinating!!

You can refuse whatever you want. They are unnecessary and very uncomfortable. I didn't refuse that, but I did refuse an ultrasound and I had a different doctor that time too that became confrontational about it. But I stood my ground. I couldn't afford an extra one and I felt it was unnecessary. You will just have to stand your ground if you have a doctor who doesn't like friction. You have the choice on any matter with your body, don't feel bullied or pressured into doing something you don't want.

Depending on where you are or what hospital you go to, if you refuse cervical checks when you are in labor they may try and send you home. They did that to me when I was pregnant with my son. They told me that they couldn't tell if I was progressing and would need the room for other patients that they knew were in active labor and tried to send me home. I caved and got the check and was 7 cm. lol

You can refuse any procedure you don't want to do. It's your right. But some midwives, mine for example, don't do them at all anyway. I'm 38 weeks and they have never checked my cervix.

I'll be getting checked just because I have to have a csection and I don't want to go into labor before my scheduled operation, but everyone is different :)!

I never had a cervical check with my first pregnancy until I was halfway through labor. this time, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna skip it altogether. :)

Absolutely! They'll want to check your progression once you are in the hospital but checks at the Dr's office really aren't necessary

You have every right to refuse checks both in prenatal care and during labor. I am planning to.
