Too soon?

So I am due for my period on the 12th I took a test yesterday the 7th was negative. And I am just curious too soon or could it be because it was a dollar store brand ! We have been trying for a year. Both our kids were conceived in November so both August babies so I had high hopes November is my mth. Advice
