Late period, negative pregnancy test?

I'm a day late for my period so i took a pregnancy test when I got home from work. How accurate are these at home tests? Usually my period symptoms happen 2-3 days before my actual period and I've had no period symptoms whatsoever. No spotting, cramping, discharge, nada. I took the test late in the day though, does that affect the results? I'll take another in the morning, just curious on how well trusted the at home tests are.
