Leaving for grad school

In a few months, I'm applying to medical school. My boyfriend, who I've talked with about spending the rest of our lives together, does not want me to go to any out of state. He says that if I do, he can't do the long distance thing. He used to have a girlfriend who was long distance (the girl he lost his virginity to) and she screwed him over and cheated on him and I think this has to do with his fear. He isn't controlling me, just saying that he can't do another long distance relationship. I don't know what to do, I want to be with him but I don't want to regret missing out on an amazing opportunity to leave my state and go somewhere I would rather live.
