Breastfeeding and nipple piercings

Question: I am a first time mom and due feb 8th. I have had both my nipples pierced for over 12 years. I am 8 months pregnant and haven't taken out my barbells as they are not bothering me. I'm not quite sure that I want to get rid of them but don't want the hassle of taking them out and putting them back in all the time to feed. Rather just have them out completely! Wondering if anyone has taken them out completely while breastfeeding and then putting them back in months later after baby is done breastfeeding? I would think they could heal over quite fast.
