If you are having twins do twins run in the family?

I see a lot of people on here having twins and am wondering if having twins can happen to anyone or is it restricted to families with twins in the family.

Answer

I am not having twins, but I am a twin, as was my mom and her mom before her. The tendency to ovulate two eggs, resulting in fraternal twins, is inherited (my twin and I and my mom and her twin and grandmother and her twin - all fraternal). Identical twins (when a fertilized egg splits) is a random occurrence and is not inherited.

I am surprisingly not having twins. My dad is a twin, I have twin sisters and twin brothers, but no twins for me!
