Drinking During Pregnancy - What is your choice, and why?
Drinking while pregnant is a HUGELY debated topic, with answers varying vastly everywhere you look, especially from people in different countries. Europeans are fairly lax with beer and wine while Americans are often very staunchly against it.
I checked out the book "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster - it's a highly rated book written by an economist who went back to the raw data from studies and performed unbiased statistical analyses on it and presented her results which got proofread by a doctor. She makes no recommendations, just presents data for the reader to make their own choices.
It's obviously every individuals choice based on what they're comfortable with, but the data from studies show a glass a day after the 1st trimester is completely insignificant, and children from moms who had a glass or two measured no differently (or sometimes better) in health, behavior and IQ than kids from moms who abstained. The US has a problem with litigation-happy people, so docs just say abstinence instead of logical moderation. I'm personally following a more European OB philosophy and have a small glass here and there.
