Someone please tell me how to fix this

There's this guy in my life who I'm really close with. I'd even call him my best friend. Recently, we've talked about talking things to the next level. But he said he can't because he's afraid it won't work and that we live too far apart (I'm west coast, he's east). HOWEVER, we continue to talk daily and our conversations aren't platonic. So, the problem is I'm really frustrated and have no idea how to handle this friendship that's morphing into something hot...then cold 😞
