Why do we pray

Question

Why do we pray to God?? Isn't He going to fulfill His will regardless of what I ask Him? I always pray to give Him thanks, but I'm a little confused when it comes to praying about certain things because He'll always do what He has planned anyway. So why does it matter if I pray for anything in particular, like when a loved one is about to die and He takes them anyway. I'm not bitter or anything, I'm just really confused and a little hurt I guess. A pastor once said that if a loved one dies, it's because we did not pray hard enough. Is that true????

I'm thinking the phrase "ask and ye shall recieve" applies here.

Asking shows him that it's important to you and that you're making at least some sort of effort.

But that aside, I think the pastor that told you people die from others not praying enough is an ass. I don't believe that to be true at all.

We all, even if we don't believe in God, are created by Him and are all given free will. So, does God know all? Yes. But does he dictate all that will happen? No. God is in control, yes. But He is not forcing His will on anyone. If he did, this world would have no death and there would be no chaos. But would we consider Him a loving God if he forced us to worship and seek Him? No. We would see Him as a dictator. Prayer is about seeking God, about developing, maintaining and building a relationship with God. Yes, God knows our hearts and thoughts. You pray to talk to Heavenly Father. Much like you would a parent,he wants to hear from you too. And just because everything is to his will, doesn't mean you should take that for granted. He knows us perfectly and knows what we need but he prefers to hear it from us instead. He loves you so much and just wants to hear from you, don't pray with a "grocery" list,  but put serious thought into praying. Be thankful, and let him know what's in your heart. I hope this helps.

My thoughts on it are that prayer is more for us as followers of Jesus than it is for God. It helps us keep things in perspective and centered on Christ.
As far as not praying hard enough for God to give us what we ask for, I don't believe that is how God works. He sees the whole picture when most times we just see a tiny part. That's where faith and Trust come in!
