Tampons vs HPT

Bought both today bc I'm 3 days late and haven't had any of my normal period symptoms. I started spotting lightly this afternoon... I got a BFN a few days ago so I'm nervous to test again. Been ttc for 7 mo... Feeling a little disheartened. Curious what you ladies would do... Just figured I'd eeny meeny miney moe this month to change things up... lol
