Comparing?

My mom does this thing where she compares everything I do/can't do to her when she was my age.

Example, "when I was your age I went blah blah blah by myself"

Like ok???? Why does she constantly compare me to herself? Like she's better than me?

She also makes sure that I know that she did things alone when she was my age. And she thinks it's ridiculous that I'm scared to go to the store alone at night (I have had many close encounters with older men when I was younger) I've almost been kidnapped. 
What's her deal?

Try to remind her that times have changed...her growing up and you growing up are completely different times and most importantly you two are not the same person...

She probably thinks that her "successes" will inspire confidence and courage in you. It may be the only way she feels she is contributing to continue being a mom in your life. Likely, she doesn't realize how it makes you feel.

I do this with my son and I realized my mom did it with me. She's not trying to be a bitch, she's trying to help you. My son is almost 9 and whines about not being able to do the dishes or make his lunch (both of which he's very capable of doing). I tell him all the time when I was his age, I not only did my chores, but I made sure I was ready for school, as well as my two younger siblings. She's trying to help you, show you how you can be independent and not rely on her for everything.

It sounds like she's just trying to make you independent... I don't think she's doing it in a mean way. Older people always compare their life to others. It's not something to get offended about.

I think your Mom just doesn't want you to be afraid. I've said the same thing to my son and I never looked at it from the view point you've given so I'm going to keep that in mind from now on. I thank you for that. As far as what your Mom is saying and what I've intended when I've said that to my son, it's like I want him to know that if I, a normal everyday person he's knows, can do something then for sure he can do it. It's not because I think I'm so great, but because I think I'm so ordinary. I'll bet your Mom is thinking something similar. Honestly you should talk to her about it. I think I would've appreciated my son coming to me and telling me how he felt rather than furthering a misunderstanding. Best of luck!...your Mom loves you.

Some kids don't realize their potential, but in the case of being afraid to go out at night? I feel like that's reasonable, chances are the area is more dangerous than when she was young.
