Baby rice at 17 weeks to soon!?

Hi ladies, my son turned 17 weeks today when some people advise baby rice but I've read a few things on google and people are saying no wait till 6 months my son is on 9 ounces every 4 hours and constantly watches everything I'm eating his really good with holding his head up and I definitely think his ready, is there any other moms out there who have started weaning? Thanks

The reason solid foods aren't recommended before 6 months is because babies have an "open gut", which means anything they consume can be passed into their blood stream potentially caused bad reactions to foods. Also, many people are skipping rice cereal because it's lack of nutritional value (it's empty calories). Babies main source of nutrition for the first year should primarily be breast milk or formula, any solid foods should be "complimentary" to that.

Is he sitting unassisted? Does he still have the tongue thrust? Can he grasp things with his forefinger and thumb? Those things in addition to being interested in your food are indications that he's ready. Infant digestive systems mature enough to process solids between 4-6 months, so waiting until closer to the 6 month mark is advisable to ensure they're able to digest it. Rice cereal doesn't have much nutritional value either.

Sounds to me like LO is ready... We had our 4 month checkup Froday and our pedi encouraged starting to feeding her solids. We tried a couple of weeks ago and she wasn't interested...

There is mounting evidence that their systems can't handle solids til 6 months. The rice is empty carbs/calories and offers no nutrition.

Our dr recommended to start rice cereal at our 4month appointment. The rice is gluten free so he recommends starting that for baby to get used to.  The rice cereal may not have a nutritional value but baby is starting to sit in his high chair and associate that with being fed and learning meal time (being fed at the same time).  I trust our pedi so we started it. We will start more solids at 6 months. If you think your babe is ready, go for it. It's not like you want to rush to purees. I'd start with 1 tablespoon a day for the first week and then increase a tablespoon each week! Good luck!
